In „MOND“, an Ulrich Seidl film production, performance artist Florentina Holzinger plays a former martial artist who leaves Austria for the Middle East to train three sisters (Andria Tayeh, Celina Antwan, Nagham Abu Baker) from a wealthy Jordanian family. What sounds initially like a dream job soon becomes unsettling: the young women are cut off from the outside world and under constant surveillance. Like Ayub’s film debut “SONNE” (2022), “MOND” was produced by Ulrich Seidl Filmproduktion and marks another highlight in the company’s recent history of successes.

Just a few days ago “The Devil’s Bath” by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala (a USF co-production with Heimatfilm Cologne & Coop99) was chosen to represent Austria in the race for the Oscars. The film premiered in competition at the Berlinale where it won a Silver Bear.

The successful feature film VENI VIDI VICI by directing duo Daniel Hoesl and Julia Niemann made it into the competition at the renowned US Sundance Festival and will finally be released in Austria in a few weeks’ time (cinema release 13 September). This means that without exception, every film produced by USF has celebrated its world premiere at an A-list festival! This is unprecedented in the history of Austrian film.

In recent years Ulrich Seidl Filmproduktion, based in Vienna, has become one of the most successful arthouse production companies in Austria. This year alone there was not only The Devils Bath but also Veni Vidi Vici, directed by Daniel Hoesl and Julia Niemann, which made it into competition at the renowned Sundance Film Festival in the United States. Kurdwin Ayub’s second feature film Moon will soon celebrate its world premiere in competition at the 77th Locarno Film Festival.

The decision to produce their co-directed film Goodnight Mommy in 2014 opened the door for other, young filmmakers. “We see ourselves as enablers. But it is actually something far more frightening: an exploration, based on real records, of a chapter of Austrian history so dark it could be a black hole — which might account for its invisibility to posterity. In its latest edition, the German newsweekly magazine DER SPIEGEL has made serious accusations against me, my method of working and my feature film SPARTA. In their text, which appeared on September 2, incorrect descriptions, rumors and events on the set of SPARTA taken out of context have been woven into a distorted picture that in no way corresponds to the facts. The journalists, without bothering to take into account the film itself, vilify my method of working and ascribe to me intentions that could not be further from the truth. I can not allow this to go unanswered.

Based on a true story, the film follows Ewald, who left Austria for Romania several years ago. Now in his 40s, he seeks a fresh start. He breaks up with his girlfriend and moves to a remote part of the country. There, with a group of young boys from the area, he transforms a dilapidated school into a fortress. The children enjoy a new, carefree existence centered around sports and play. But Ewald is forced to confront a truth he has long repressed, one that neither the boys nor the outside world suspect. On the inside he is secretly struggling against his pedophile urges.

In my work I have always sought to plumb the contradictions in our thoughts and actions that are the essence of being human. I am aware that my world view as an artist, and how I express the latter in my films, is in blatant contradiction with the contemporary zeitgeist that demands a simplified, context-free “either-or,” when a “both-as well as” far better expresses human experience. 

All my films, my entire artistic work is an appeal for empathy for the battered and fallen, the marginalized and ostracized: Rather than pillory them morally, I instead demand that they be viewed as complex and even contradictory human beings.

To recognize and describe the resulting ambivalence between benevolence and abuse, to look at rather than away from, and thus exclude – I see these as a crucial responsibility both for me as an artist and human being. Unlike what the SPIEGEL article suggests, my films are not the product of my manipulating my actors, misrepresenting the film to them, much less abusing them. On the contrary: Without the trust that we build over weeks and months together, the long shooting periods my films require would be impossible. I have the greatest respect for all my actors and would never take a decision that could in any way endanger their physical and psychological wellbeing. 

In the case of SPARTA the shoot extended over more than a year. If, as the SPIEGEL claims, the parents had had objections about the shoot or the way we treated their children, or if the children had stopped feeling comfortable with us, they would not have continued to collaborate over the long period spanning winter and summer shoots. Needless to say I never pushed the children (or any of the other actors for that matter) to do things on camera that they did not wish to do. 

The young actors were under constant supervision. Next to the set we furnished rooms where they could rest or play, just as we had done on other films of mine. When not on set they could spend time there, accompanied by trained educators.

Unlike what the SPIEGEL claims, I also explained all the essential elements of the film to the parents in numerous one-on-one conversations (with an interpreter) prior to shooting. Including the ambivalence of the character of Ewald, the Austrian protagonist, and his relationship to children. 

I also wonder what the SPIEGEL reporters claim to know about SPARTA and told the parents. They didn’t ask us for a copy of the script that Veronika Franz and I wrote – and which in any event constantly evolved during the shoot over the course of my collaboration with the actors, and was only intended as a starting point for improvisation. Nor did the journalists request to see the film.

Therefore they can only have confronted the Romanian parents with incomplete information. Were the parents led to fear that the film might contain sex scenes involving pedophilia? It doesn’t. No child was ever filmed naked or in a sexual situation, pose or context. Such scenes were never my intention and none were ever filmed. During shooting we never crossed the line of ethical and moral boundaries. 

In the summer of 2019, a few days after we wrapped shooting, I visited all the children and their parents at home to thank them for their participation in the film. None of them voiced any complaint, discomfort or criticism. I hope that SPARTA, when the film has opened in theatres, will dispel the objections that have only been leveled by outsiders in this article.

Three teenage girls from Vienna twerk in hijab and sing a pop song. A YouTube video of it makes them famous overnight, especially among Kurdish Muslims. Yesmin, the only one of the friends who is Kurdish herself, begins to distance herself more and more from her culture. Nati and Bella, on the other hand, seem fascinated by a world that is strange to them. When the girls meet two young Kurdish patriots, the situation threatens to escalate. A film about young people caught between social media and self-discovery, a story of rebellious young women.

VERONIKA FRANZ was born in Vienna in 1965 and earned a degree in German literature and philosophy. Originally a film journalist at the Viennese daily Kurier, since 1997 she has worked alongside Ulrich Seidl as artistic collaborator and co-written with him the screenplays for all his films, notably “Dog Days’ (Hundstage, 2001), “Import/Export” (2007), the “Paradise” Trilogy (2012/13) and “Wicked Games” (in production). In 2003 she co-founded with him Ulrich Seidl Filmproduktion. In 2012 Franz made her directorial debut with the documentary “Kern” (co-directed with Several Fiala). It was followed by “Goodnight Mommy” (Ich seh Ich seh, 2014), her first fiction feature, which she again co-directed with Fiala. After its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Goodnight Mommy went on to win numerous prizes at festivals around the world and was chosen as Austria’s submission to the Oscars for Best Foreign-Language Film. A US remake is currently underway, produced by Animal Kingdom (“It Follows,” “It Comes at Night”). The directing duo’s first English-language film, “The Lodge,” starring Riley Keogh and produced by Hammer Films and FilmNation Entertainment (“The Arrival”) had its world premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. Currently Franz and Fiala are again working together in Austria on a historical drama, “The Devil’s Bath” (Des Teufels Bad).

Yesmin (Melina Benli), Bella (Law Wallner) and Natalie (Maya Wopienka) become famous overnight with a YouTube video - but only among Muslim Kurds. Yesmin, a Kurd herself, slowly begins to distance herself from her own culture. But she also becomes estranged from Bella and Leyla, who are getting entangled in the extreme fringes of Kurdish patriotism.

Claudia was 15 when she had her son. The two now live in a public housing apartment together with her brother and her mother in Vienna. None of them has a job, but what they lack the most is the ability to imagine that things could ever get any better.

Richard, a journalist, decides to spend the Christmas holidays with his two children Mia and Aidan as well as his new girlfriend Grace in his cozy, snow-bound cabin in the mountains. But his kids are far from happy with the arrangement, showing their mistrust of their future stepmother at every opportunity. When Richard has to go back to the city for a few days on business, he leaves his family alone in the mountains, and a slew of sinister events unfolds, reinforcing Mia and Aidan’s belief that something is wrong with Grace. The siblings eventually learn the gruesome details of Grace’s childhood, which sets off an escalating game of cat and mouse that takes the three of them to the brink of madness – and beyond.

Whatever people no longer need, they dump in the basement. But they also store down there everything that they don't want others to see. In the Basement tells stories about people who pursue their obsessions in hiding. It's about sexuality and being ready to shoot, huge snakes in terrariums, fitness rooms and laundry rooms, and opera arias that fade out in vaulted underground rooms. Naked flesh is thrashed, people scream with pleasure and jokes are exchanged beneath a portrait of the Führer. After an extremely traumatic experience, psychiatrist Richard persuades his two children, the teenager Aiden and his younger sister Mia, to spend the Christmas holidays together with his new girlfriend Grace in a secluded hut. The young woman's dark past and the children's rejection of her fire up a claustrophobic chamber play in contrasting images, which gets out of hand at the latest when the three are snowed in and uncanny events pile up in the house.

DIE KINDER DER TOTEN, produced by Ulrich Seidl Filmproduction in cooperation with steirischer herbst, a Film by the Film- and Performance Collective Nature Theater of Oklahoma, based on a novel of the same name by Elfriede Jelinek, had it's world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival 2019.

The Jury Rita di Santo (GB), Orlando Margarido (Brasil), José Romero (Peru), Salome Kikaleishvili (Georgia), Angelika Kettelhack (Germany), Massimo Lechi (Italy), Eithne Mary O’Neill (France), Suncica Unevska (Mazedonia) und Ricardo Brunn (Brunn) justified thei selection:

The actors are amateurs, as well as the directing, the make up looks cheap, the director's didn't even read the novel they were adapting. Everything could have gone wrong with this film, but it did not fail. Instead it brings life to a novel almost impossible to transpose by doing a silent film about the rise of the living dead, which is not only the rise of the repressed past, but also a rise of cinema, using the nearly dead format - super 8, reminiscent of home movies. The result is hilarious, edgy, at times confusing, funny and something not everyone will agree on. But this is cinema: We need to disagree!

We are very happy with Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala who, after their feature film debut Ich seh Ich seh / Goodnight Mommy (Ulrich Seidl Filmproduktion), are now teaching us to fear with their first english-language film.

THE LODGE, produced by Hammer Films and Film Nation, will celebrate its world premiere at the 35th Sundance Festival.
