PARADISE: Trilogy
PARADISE: Love - On the beaches of Kenya they're known as Sugar Mamas: European women who seek out African boys selling love to earn a living. Teresa, a 50-year-old Austrian and mother of a daughter entering puberty, travels to this vacation paradise in search of love. She goes from one Beach Boy to the next, from one disappointment to the next. On the beaches of Kenya, love is a business.
In PARADISE: Faith Ulrich Seidl explores what it means to carry the cross. For Anna Maria, a single woman in her 50s, paradise lies with Jesus. To him she devotes her every act and thought. She spends her summer vacation doing missionary work, carrying from door to door a 15"-high statue of the Wandering Mother of God. One day, when after years of absence, her husband, an Egyptian and Muslim, comes home, her life goes off its rails. Hymns and prayers are now joined by fighting.
PARADISE: Hope tells the story of Melanie, an overweight 13-year-old girl, and her first love. While her mother, Teresa, travels to Kenya and her aunt does missionary work for Jesus Christ, the teenager spends her summer vacation with other adolescents in a strict diet camp in the Austrian countryside. Between sports activities and nutritional counseling, pillow fights and her first cigarettes, she falls in love with the camp director, a doctor 40 years older than herself. She loves him with all the single-mindedness of first love, and in all innocence wants to seduce him.
