The loss of Hans Michael Rehberg
With deep sadness we announce the death of actor Hans Michael Rehberg – suddenly, though after a long and serious illness.
I knew Michael Rehberg only briefly, but in that short time I realized how extraordinary was the gift he gave me of his performance in my film Böse Spiele [Horrible Men] (which we only recently started shooting). This was to be Michael Rehberg's last film. Scenes of profound sadness and authenticity that I – and, I'm certain, audiences, later, too – will never forget. As a person, Hans Michael Rehberg was modest, without vanity. He was always completely devoted to the project, always striving to give his best, to achieve perfection. Despite the illness. Despite the pain. Despite the fear of dying. My deepest respect. With all my heart.
Ulrich Seidl and the entire team at Ulrich Seidl FilmDiagonale Award for Wolfgang and Sebastian Thaler
We warmly congratulate Wolfgang Thaler, Ulrich Seidl's longtime cameraman and collaborator, and his son Sebastian Thaler on being awarded with 2017 Diagonale Award for Cinematography for their work on UGLY. The film was directed by Juri Rechinsky and produced by Novotny & Novotny in coproduction with Pronto Film and Ulrich Seidl Filmproduction.
The jury explained their decision as follows:
"In a fragmentary film with sparse dialogue, and in which little is discussed, the visual language assumes an important part of the narrative. In Ugly, with its distant tableaux and intense closeups, the viewer is given a lot of space. Through the symbiosis of spontaneous and unaffected but at the same time extremely composed images, the film develops an irresistible pull. Through the diversity of its subjects, lighting moods and compositions and its ever startling, new points of view, the film is in constant motion, despite its calm narrative surface."
Loss of Christine Jirku
We at Ulrich Seidl Filmproduktion mourn the loss of Christine Jirku (1945 – 2017), the actress who delivered a harrowing performance in “Dog Days” (2001) alongside Georg Friedrich and Victor Hennemann, and who was slated to appear in Ulrich Seidl's next film "Böse Spiele" (unofficial title: Nasty Games). She died unexpectedly last Tuesday after a short but serious illness.
Christine Jirku was a member of the Landestheater Niederösterreich, where she last appeared in the production of "Lights in the Dusk," the Nestroy Theatre Prize-winning adaptation of Aki Kaurismäki's movie.
Born in Vienna in 1945, Christine Jirku graduated from the Krauss Acting School and also studied singing and dancing. She has appeared at the Volkstheater Wien, Theater in der Josefstadt and the Schauspielhaus Wien, among many other venues, and also staged and performed in numerous Brecht evenings
We fondly recall the humor with which Christine tackled her role in "Dog Days." And her little dog who was always at her side. Christine's voice, with which she sang so movingly, still echoes in our ears. Thank you, Christine Jirku.Silver Bear for Georg Friedrich
